DIY: notebook cover

April 26, 2013

I needed a new notebook to scrabble down notes in for my blog, my ideas and my business. I looked around our apartment and found a notebook that was suitable but I really didn't like the cover at all so I decided to make a very pretty design to motivate me and to be the perfect little book to write down everything from ideas and sketches to tutorials and business plans. I love the way it turned out. It's easy and simple to make...come and join the fun!

What you need:
  • a notebook, no matter if thin or thick, you could just buy a cheap one with an ugly cover - that is something I have noticed also ugly covers are just cheaper so this is the perfect solution for those books
  • packing paper
  • watercolors, colored pencils, acrylics whatever you like best
  • black ink pen, black pen
  • glue
  • tape
First thing you need to do is cut out packing paper in the size twice as big as your notebook plus leave extra space for the covering of the book.

Cut a triangle shape into the packing paper

Glue this triangle to the inside of the packing paper

Your cover should look something like this

Now cover your notebook in the cover and fixate it with tape or glue. I added some fun tape to the mix.

Now take time and think about what kind of design you would like for your notebook. This is the fun part. I decided to go for a simple ethno style and motivating words. I painted this little design with water colors it works great on the packing paper, it soaks it up nicely and the colors get this earthy, natural feel to them.

Before writing on it with a black pen, write your chosen words on it using a pencil. This way you can correct where it is going and if you like the font you are writing in etc. I loved the cursive look "Let's do it"

I'm loving it! Are you? Here's a close up of the pattern with the writing.

I think I'm in love with this notebook now. Yay, that is the exact boost I needed to write more. I want to make more! If I have other fun ideas I'll let you know. Oh this is great! Did you try this? I'm curious and I'd love to see it! Share and comment! Happy crafting!
